Can Music Conquer All?: the Sounds of Personal and Political Warfare ≈ September 28th, Start 8pm/ Doors 7:30pm
Violinist Maya Ramchandran and pianist Audrey Vardanega come together as Duo IRI to present a unique program of sonatas and works for violin and piano that builds upon the intersection of their music-making and their work as academics in non-musical fields. Their program structure aims to break down the traditional recital form by encouraging open discussion of new ideas while taking in Classical music, and deconstructing the formalism that can make classical concerts alienating to non-musical audiences. The program is based upon intellectual explorations of political and physiological conflict in music, specifically the ways in which music written during wartime compare with music written during composers’ experiences of emotional conflict, or ‘internal warfare’. Maya and Audrey will alternate between performing and speaking, taking breaks in which audience members can contribute to the discussion, ask questions, or talk to the performers more informally.
